WELL, I SUPPOSE THINGS DON'T GET WORSE THAN HANGING FROM A HELIUM BALLOON A MILE ABOVE SOME UNRECOGNIZED STATE. OF COURSE, MY GRIP COULD WEAKEN, OR I COULD GET SUCKED INTO A JET INTAKE. THAT'S ONE OF THE REMARKABLE THINGS ABOUT LIFE. IT'S NEVER SO BAD THAT IT CAN'T GET WORSE. - Bill Waterson

The diminishing art of writing

As I write or rather type this, I realise how less I hold a pen and write. Gone are the days when I would write for hours ( especially during those marathon exams ). Now my pen holding ritual is limited to recreating my signature on cheques or documents. Yesterday I had the arduous task of writing an official letter and I was nursing my hand by the time I finished one page back to back ! I felt the need to go back to the basics and learn cursive writing, since my hand almost refused to turn at the appropriate curves ! It is so much easier to just jab the keys and see the words instantly appear on the screen right ? And you have spell check and dictionary, so why does anyone need to remember those impossible spellings! Well, I do maintain a notebook to jot down notes at work or some random thoughts, but its not fluent writing, just a haphazard scribble and hardly legible. It is almost as if the fingers have mutated to aid fast typing or texting and I can boast of a decent speed when it comes to typing or texting. Talk about holding a pencil or a pen, well, its so passe ! Who needs to write, when you can type ? Address books or phone books are replaced by mobile phonebooks and PDAs, diaries are replaced by blogs ( like the one by yours truly ! ) and letters by e-mails and phone calls. Most of the authors/writers of this age type their manuscripts. So who really writes? Is it limited to only the school and college kids? Or the non tech savvy people who still prefer to be manual ? It is so nice to read about Harry Potter and his friends dipping their quills in ink and scratching on parchment, and no, they don't use magic for this sacred task. So why do we look for easier alternatives?
A recent study reveals that school children's grammar and vocabulary is fast diminishing. Also their reading habits are almost non existent. Bt de txtng skils r rockng nd goin gr8 !! They also write their exams papers in the short format without paying heed to grammar or correct spelling. Looks like the english language does have some unnecessary letters which can be eliminated ! As for keeping in touch with your writing skills, how about writing down your favourite quotes, lines etc instead of the usual cut-copy-paste ? And noting down some one's telephone number instead of saving it on your mobile phone ? It will help you if your phone snores when the battery is down !

Contentment

It is said that teachers influence children the most. I will never forget what my 2nd standard teacher used to repeat often - "Be contended with what you have". Without fully understanding its meaning, I used to repeat this along with her. Every time I wasn't happy with things around, these words would resonate in my head. Life would be so much more simpler and happier if all of us could follow this mantra. But I always had this doubt, if everyone got happy and contended, then who would aspire or want to achieve more ? If no one dreamt of the big things, the world wouldn't be what it is today. Everyone would just live on being satisfied with mediocrity. So where do we draw the line? This is best explained by Bill Watterson in the following strip. Read on , enjoy and reflect.

Limerick?!!?

This one is really old; wrote it for the Times of India NIE in my 8th std.

There was a man with a huge nose
When he smelt a big red rose
He failed to notice and to see
That in it there was a honey bee
Which stung him right on the nose

A Whole new world..

This is the soundtrack from one of my favourite movies- Alladin. The song is perfect for a fairy tale like fantasy setting. Alladin takes princess Jasmine on a magic carpet ride and they discover the world from a new viewpoint. As you listen to the song, you also go on a fantasy ride- with the music and the lyrics, with Alladin and Jasmine -trying to imagine how it would be to behold the world from atop a magic carpet! Its light, breezy, romantic and full of magic :-)
Catch the magic at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRi20cWMYOM

The lyrics go like this -

A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you

Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky

A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world
That's where we'll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

On a recent visit to Disneyland in Hongkong, I was treated to an amazing visual of fireworks lighting up the night sky and the sleeping beauty castle. The fireworks were to the tune of a whole new world. The lyrics were slightly modified and the tune a little slow, but the magic was intact. It was indeed a whole new world seeing the bright fireworks dance across the sky, showing different shades of a magical castle !

So what if you cant fly over the world on a magic carpet and view the beauty, you can look at the world from a different angle and discover things you have never seen before and behold a whole new world!

The Reiki Principles

The Reiki principles are simple, powerful thoughts that can be put into action just for today ! And slowly it becomes a daily practice and a way of life. A positive mind and attitude can be achieved by integrating these principles into our daily life. Yes, its easier said than done, the principles sound simple yet hard to practice, but reading them is a good way to start.
So here they are -

The Reiki principles
BY DR.MIKAO USUI

Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

It's a magical world..

This is what the last Calvin and Hobbes strip says and there couldn't be a more perfect way to end a series. It conveys hope, inspiration, adventure and above all the message that the end of something is not the end of the world ! It opens up new possibilities that need to be explored. Leave it to Bill Watterson to simplify and capture the very essence of life through the eyes of a six year old in this beautiful closing strip. So what are we waiting for? Its a magical world, lets go exploring !
